The appearance of newborns does not quite match the sweet baby from advertising. But there is a great deal of change in the first week of life, and before you get dressed, you are convinced that you have the most beautiful child in the world. From the child’s point of view, his birth is a tremendous shock to all sense organs. But not only the eyes and ears are overwhelmed, even the nose is flooded by new odors. When it’s on your stomach, the strong sense of smell directs your baby instinctively to its source of nutrition, your breast. Distances can make your baby differ in both near and far.
Your Baby’s First Week
Everything that is more than an arm’s length away, newborns look blurred. The close-up range of up to 30 cm, that is, the distance between the parent’s face and the baby eye when feeding and carrying, is quite sharp. Newborns can already perceive different colors. However, in the coming weeks, you will be most likely reacting to strong contrasts such as checkerboard patterns. The most attractive image is the human face for newborns. They fix the longest smilies and circular patterns with two eyes in scientific research. The first toy is therefore all that, because of its strong contrasts, leads to the appearance, e.g. a mobile or simple picture book. His own reflection is also fascinating.
Place an unbreakable mirror on the bedside, and you will see how happy your baby looks at herself. Even in the first week of life a baby can distinguish and imitate faces of different persons. Keep your face as close as possible to your small face, the faster you will learn to know! If you often show him certain small movements (tongue stretching, eyebrows, noses), it will soon be imitated. In newborn babies, communication basically means crying. Researchers call the “active wax phase” in contrast to the “quiet wax phase”, which is still somewhat rarer.
The Most Important Thing in First Week
These silent moments are there for learning. Your baby takes so much new stuff so quickly! Use these phases to get in touch with your baby intensively and get to know each other better. Talk to him, sing something to him, take a walk through the house and show him the pictures on your walls. After a few minutes, it becomes sleepy or quivering (the other word for “active wake phase” …). Food intake is the most important occupation. In the first few weeks a newborn is hungry every two or three hours, occasionally even more frequently.
We have gathered all the information about breastfeeding or the diet of youngsters. In addition, your midwife midwife and your mother’s mother will be available for questions and provide practical guidance. The second most important is sleep. Every 24 hours will sleep about 16-17 hours – but unfortunately not in one piece, which the mother would do very well, but divided into about eight shorter sleep phases.
The most important tip for you: sleep when your baby sleeps! Everything else (household, shopping, visitors) is now completely irrelevant. And let it be a long time. Only at the end of the first month do babies have a more or less regular sleep and drinking rhythm and you can plan your daily routine a bit better. Newborns are slowly adapting to their environment, which is suddenly so vast, but they are still very happy when they are tightly wrapped in a blanket, worn and rocked (puck technique, pucken). Touch is soothing to them, whether by massage, cuddling or stroking.
